Samuel Higginbottom
Samuel Higginbottom (born 1835) is a member of the Higginbottom family. He married Jane "Jennie" (Baines) Griffiths Higginbottom. His child was Sam Higginbottom.
Early life
Samuel Higginbottom belonged to a Lancashire family long settled at Little Hulton, the village halfway between Manchester and Bolton where the names of six generations of Higginbottoms were carved on tombstones in the churchyard.[2][3] The family were coal-mine engineers.[3] When he was eight years old he was stricken with a malady that withered and twisted his left foot, and the affliction unfitted him for work in the mines.[3]
Marriage and family
He was the second husband of Jane Baines, who had been left a young widow by her first marriage and who signed herself "Jennie Baines Higginbottom".[1][5] Their son Sam Higginbottom was born on 27 October 1874 at Greenheyes, Manchester, and was christened "Sam" because his father was Samuel Higginbottom.[4] According to an account of the family, the marriage was regarded somewhat as a twofold mésalliance: the Higginbottoms were none too pleased that he had married "a foreigner from Wales", and Jane's family had an idea that she had married beneath her.[1]
Work and later life
He was a coal merchant in Manchester.[2] After business reverses he became a farmer and cattle dealer in North Wales, where the family migrated in 1891.[2] He was still alive when his son Sam left for America on 9 August 1894.[2]
