Sherlock Swann

1866–1935confirmed

Sherlock Swann (27 December 1866 – 6 March 1935) was born in Annapolis, Maryland to Ellen (Penrose) Swann and Thomas Swann. He married Edith R. (Deford) Swann. His children were Deford Swann and Sherlock Swann Jr.. He died in 1935, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Early life

Sherlock Swann was born on 27 December 1866 in the old Executive Mansion at the Naval Academy grounds in Annapolis, Maryland.[1][4]

He was a son of Thomas Swann and Ellen Penrose, and a grandson of Governor Thomas Swann of Maryland.[1][6]

Marriage and family

Sherlock Swann married Edith Robinson De Ford, youngest daughter of Thomas De Ford, at Old St. Paul's Church in Baltimore.[2][4]

The sources disagree on the marriage date: the Maryland Center for History and Culture finding aid gives 30 November 1897, while a contemporary newspaper report and the Penrose family history give 30 November 1898, and the finding aid's 1897 date is an error.[1][2][4]

His son Sherlock Swann Jr. was born on 30 September 1900.[3][4]

He was also the father of Deford Swann and of a daughter.[3][5]

According to his 1935 obituary, he was survived by his widow, Mrs. Edith R. Deford Swann, his son Sherlock Swann Jr., and a daughter.[3]

Career

Sherlock Swann was Postmaster of Baltimore from 1913 to 1921.[1][3]

Later life and death

He died in Baltimore on 6 March 1935 of bronchial pneumonia.[1]
