Capt. Millen Griffith (26 July 1827 – 17 August 1896) was born in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He married Jane Maria Lord. His children were Millen Griffith, Edwin Lord Griffith and Charles Lord Griffith. He died in 1896, in San Rafael, California.
Early life
According to his San Francisco Call obituary, Millen Griffith was a native of New York State, born seventy-one years before his death, who went to sea at sixteen as a cabin-boy on an East Indiaman.[4] The same obituary states that in 1849 he rounded Cape Horn and dropped anchor in the Bay of San Francisco.[4] A compiled genealogy instead gives his birth as 26 July 1827 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, while the death notice in the same paper gave his age as 69 years, and the obituary's account of a New York State birth at about 71 years of age conflicts with both.[2][4]
Marriage and family
Millen Griffith married Jane Maria Lord on 12 July 1851 in New York.[6] A son, Millen Griffith, was born in San Francisco on 12 August 1854 and died there in 1877, unmarried.[8] A second son, Edwin Lord Griffith, was born in San Francisco on 13 April 1856 and died in Rome, Italy.[9] A son, Charles Lord Griffith, was born in San Francisco about 1864.[2] Jane Maria Lord died on 2 July 1896.[2]
