Herman Lilienthal Lonsdale

née Hermann Lilienthal

1858–1940probable

Herman Lilienthal Lonsdale (née Hermann Lilienthal) (12 February 1858 – 16 August 1940) was born in Hong Kong. He married Helen Lonsdale. His children were Emma Lilienthal and John Whittaker Lonsdale. He died in 1940, in Colchester, Connecticut.

Early life

Herman Lilienthal Lonsdale was recorded in the Trinity College alumni history, as a member of the class of 1886, under the name Hermann Lilienthal.[3][6] According to that alumni history, he was born on February 12, 1858, in China, which does not specify Hong Kong and does not name his parents.[3][6] A user-submitted family-history profile gives Hong Kong as his birthplace and May 28, 1858, a date that conflicts with the alumni history's February 12 date, so the Hong Kong detail remains an unverified lead.[3][5][6]

Marriage and family

The alumni history records his marriage to Miss H. Whittaker in Newport, Rhode Island, on October 1, 1889.[7] A later necrology identifies Helen Lonsdale as the widow of the Rev. Herman L. Lonsdale.[7] The New York Times identified John Whittaker Lonsdale as the son of the Rev. and Mrs. H. L. Lonsdale.[8] A church notice described Emma as a sister of the Rev. Herman L. Lonsdale.[4][9]

Career

The 1918 Episcopal directory cross-referenced Herman Lilienthal under Lonsdale and listed Herman Lilienthal Lonsdale at Astoria, New York.[1] According to the Episcopal necrology, he was rector of St. George's Church in Astoria, Queens, for twenty years until he retired in 1922.[2]

Later life and death

The Episcopal necrology reported that the Rev. Herman L. Lonsdale died on August 16, 1940, at his summer home in Colchester, Connecticut.[2]
