Thomas Rogers
Thomas Rogers (1571 – 1621) was born in Watford, Northamptonshire, England to Eleanor Rogers and William Rogers. He married Alice (Cosford) Rogers. He had 6 children, including Thomas Rogers, Richard Rogers and Joseph Rogers. He died in 1621, in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony.
Early life
Thomas Rogers was born about 1571 in the area of Watford, Northamptonshire.[1] His birth year is an estimate based on his date of marriage rather than on a baptism record.[2] No baptism record for him survives in the Watford parish register, whose earliest Rogers entries are 1570 and 1575.[9] He was still under 21 in August 1585, when his father's will left him a messuage to enter at the age of twenty-one, so he was born after August 1564.[6] The 1585 will of William Rogers of Watford names Thomas Rogers as his eldest son and names Eleanor Rogers as William's wife.[26]
Marriage and family
Thomas Rogers married Alice Cosford at Watford on 24 October 1597.[7][24] Six children of Thomas and Alice Rogers were baptised in Watford parish between 1598 and 1613: Thomas, Richard, Joseph, John, Elizabeth and Margaret.[8][19]
Leiden and the Mayflower
Thomas Rogers was a camlet merchant.[1][4] He was admitted a citizen of Leiden on 25 June 1618 and sold his house on the Barbarasteeg on 1 April 1620 for 300 guilders before sailing on the Mayflower.[4][18] Thomas Rogers and his son Joseph sailed on the Mayflower in 1620, Joseph being the only member of his family aboard.[5][10] He subscribed his name to the Mayflower Compact at Cape Cod on 11 November 1620 and is identified as the eighteenth signer.[14][15]
Death
One account places his death probably in January or February 1620/1, while another gives it as likely between January and March 1621.[3][16] In the 1623 Plymouth land division Joseph Rogers was granted two acres as a Mayflower passenger, one for himself and one for his deceased father Thomas Rogers.[11]
